Nokia Siemens Networks acquires certain wireless network infrastructure assets of Motorola Solutions

Motorola Solutions and Nokia Siemens Networks have announced that the latter has completed its acquisition of Motorola Solutions’ networks assets for US $975m in cash.

As part of the deal, responsibility for supporting 50 operators across 52 countries and approximately 6900 employees will transfer to Nokia Siemens Networks. This means that responsibility for supporting customers of Motorola Solutions’ GSM, CDMA, WCDMA, WiMAX and LTE products and services have passed to Nokia Siemens Networks.

In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks is acquiring a number of research and development facilities including sites in the United States, China, Russia, India and the UK.

Based on revenue, the addition of Motorola Solutions’ Networks assets makes Nokia Siemens Networks the third largest wireless infrastructure vendor in the United States and the leading non-Japanese wireless vendor in Japan.

Rajeev Suri, chief executive officer, Nokia Siemens Networks, explained that the people, customers and technology acquired would greatly complement the existing business by taking the company into new markets and broadening its market share.

“Our combined knowledge and experience will provide our newly expanded customer base with the means to grow by providing greater value to their subscribers,” he said.

Relief ahead for mobile data networks

A new study from Juniper Research has found that 63% of the traffic generated by smartphones, tablets and feature phones will transfer onto fixed networks via Wi-Fi and Femtocells by 2015.

As a result, the annual mobile data traffic offloaded from operators’ networks via the two is forecast to reach nearly 9000 petabytes (PB) within four years – a figure equating to some 11bn movie downloads.

Although WiFi accounts for over 98% of the traffic currently offloaded, Femtocells will account for a steadily increasing proportion over the forecast period, with the highest penetration occuring in North America.

It is also expected that the percentage of traffic offloaded in developed markets will actually diminish towards the end of the forecast period and begin to plateau in several other regions due to the accelerating take-up of LTE. However, despite this the volume of data traffic offloaded from mobile networks will continue to grow strongly throughout the next five years as the total volume delivered to mobile devices accelerates.

Nitin Bhas, author of the report, said: “As a high percentage of mobile data consumption occurs while indoors or in motion, operators have an opportunity to offload data traffic onto complementary fixed networks via WiFi and Femtocells. Offloading also has the potential for creating new services and applications and enhancing the usage of existing services.”

Swisscom selects inter-carrier and wholesale billing solution from NEWCON

Swisscom, Switzerland’s leading telecom provider, has selected a next generation, flexible inter-carrier and wholesale billing Solution from NEWCON.

The new solution has been implemented with a target to reduce the total cost of ownership for billing service by more than 20% and position Swisscom as one of most competitive Telcos in the European market.

Following a one-year intensive vendor selection process NEWCON says that it was selected because of its successful long-term experience in this field as a service integrator and solution provider for numerous other customers. Its ability to minimise the risks of revenue loss from potential OSS and BSS gaps and philosophy of ‘OSS/BSS Integration’ were also seen as the right step moving forward for Swisscom.

With 5.8m mobile users, over 400,000 TV customers and around 1.6m broadband connections, Swisscom offers a full range of products and services for mobile, landline and IP-based voice and data communications.

Gerald Haidl, CEO of NEWCON, said that the company would provide competence in strategy and implementation for the operator.

“That means we support our customers from management consulting to service integration,” he said. “We are aware of the needs of IT, technology, sales and finance. Only with this overall view we are able to meet the objectives of an international major customer [such] as Swisscom.”

Subex introduces pre-paid channel assurance solution

Subex Limited, a leading global provider of operations and business support systems (OSS/BSS), has announced the launch of its pre-paid channel assurance product, a packaged solution offering based on its ROC solution suite.

The pre-paid channel assurance solution uses control systems and processes based on advanced analytics techniques to accurately reconcile and report customer payment transactions and adjustments. This, combined with its data visualisation approach, enables service providers to automate the validation of processes around the back end of cash management activities such as validation of fees and charges associated from direct and indirect partners.

According to KPMG, pre-paid is the largest and most vulnerable revenue stream for the majority of operators, with it representing around 90% of total revenue for many in emerging markets. With pre-paid CSPs operating in real-time, they require more dynamic revenue assurance procedures to limit losses. As such, assuring processes around cash management activities plays an important role because of the increase in number of payment channels and the complexity involved in customer payment transactions and cash management processes.

Mark Nicholson, chief technology officer, Subex, said: “The pre-paid channel assurance solution will enable service providers to substantially improve their operational and financial controls around customer payment transactions and cash management processes, giving them unprecedented, near-real-time visibility into their cash flows.”

The partnership combines NetFlow and device-based monitoring with real-time application transaction analysis to provide a scalable and comprehensive solution for ensuring enterprise-wide performance and reliability of mission-critical business applications.

ExtraHop’s application delivery assurance system provides application-level visibility with no agents, configuration, or overhead. SevOne’s network performance management solution monitors millions of IT device elements and flows to keep increasingly complex networks, servers and application infrastructure functioning at peak performance levels.

As a result of the deal the companies believe customers will enjoy the ease of deployment, fast time to results, small solution footprint, and lower cost of ownership that the solution provides.

Jesse Rothstein, CEO and co-founder, ExtraHop, explained that up till now, businesses seeking an application and network performance management solution have had to consider the downside of legacy and incumbent technology.

“These tools rarely scale to modern IT environments, are difficult to deploy and maintain, and can perturb the very systems they are monitoring,” he said. “The integration of best-of-breed products from ExtraHop and SevOne provides businesses with a compelling alternative to legacy management suites that are lagging further and further behind.”

The rise of the Smartphone has caused communications service providers to rethink how they package and price data services. Just as CSPs are shifting their pricing strategies to tiered and segmented pricing, along comes the next must-have smart device, the tablet! Now the challenge is for CSPs to create bundled offers across multiple devices that are intuitive, provide the best value for their customers, and engender customer loyalty across a multitude of new device offerings. A new approach to pricing, packaging and bundling data services is required for success as tablets become pervasive. Find out more.

Teleca acquires UK based SurfKitchen

Teleca, a supplier of solutions and services to the mobile and connected devices industries, today announced that it has acquired UK based SurfKitchen.

SurfKitchen, which has approximately 55 employees, helps mobile operators and their partners overcome the discoverability, usability and fulfillment challenges associated with the delivery of mobile applications and services.

SurfKitchen will stay as an independent business unit within the Teleca organisation. The company will focus globally on the operator segment, concentrating on business development, sales and product research and development. SurfKitchen will be able to make use of Teleca’s global services for its customer deployments.

“This acquisition brings together two companies with very complementary skill sets”, said Michel Quazza, chairman and CEO of SurfKitchen. “We get access to Teleca’s strong presence in the connected devices industry and its extensive partner network, while Teleca can offer its deep knowledge of embedded systems to our operator customers. The result is true end-to-end services that benefit the whole industry and will provide unique differentiation”.

René Svendsen-Tune, CEO at Teleca, added: “The mobile-and connected devices industries are moving from software enabled hardware businesses to hardware enabled software businesses. We see rapid growth in the overall market of content and application consumption, and through this acquisition we can offer mobile operators, platform providers and other layers in the mobile industry complete solutions for applications and content delivery.”

2011 mobile operator service revenues to exceed $1 trillion

In 2010, the world’s mobile operator community, composed of more than 900 operators globally, generated US$965 billion in annualised service revenues according to the latest research from analyst firm, Informa Telecoms & Media.

As the impact of the economic downturn on the industry eases and as data continues to offset regulatory-driven pressures on core voice and SMS revenues, overall service revenues are forecast to exceed US$1 trillion for the first time during 2011, before growing to reach US$1.14 trillion by the end of 2015.

“The operators may earn big, but it should never be forgotten that they also invest heavily to generate these returns,” said Thomas Wehmeier, principal analyst at the firm. “Deploying and operating mobile networks to support more than 5.3 billion connections is an extremely resource-intensive business and we estimate that operators worldwide invested more than US$175 billion in capex during 2010 alone. Cumulatively, total capex spend shelled out by operators has been in excess of US$1 trillion over the past decade.”

Informa also forecasted that revenues from all mobile data services, including SMS, will grow to US$453 billion in 2015, up from just over US$253 billion in 2010. “If the media hype is to be believed around the impact of over-the-top VoIP players such as Skype and Viber and the emergence of competing forms of social communication from Facebook and Twitter, you’d be easily pressed into believing that operators should start thinking about writing off their voice businesses,” added Wehmeier. “Such talk is of course foolhardy and revenues from voice services will still make up more than 60% of the industry’s revenue base at the end of 2015.”

African provider selects Tribold for product management

Internet Solutions (IS), an African IP-based communications service provider has chosen Tribold, a provider of Enterprise Product Management (EPM) software, for its Product and Service Catalog programme.

Andrew Procter, the CIO of IS, commented: “Internet Solutions is focused on improving the customer and sales experience and to do this we needed to ensure our front line teams only sell supported, standardised products and services. We are looking to Tribold EPM to underpin our concept-to-market process and improve data quality across the BSS layer. We selected Tribold EPM for our programme due to the product’s maturity and usability and the added benefit of the deep domain experience delivered by the Tribold team in rolling out product management solutions to the enterprise sector.

“Ernest Margitta, Tribold’s vice president, added: “Working with Internet Solutions we see a joint drive from both their business and IT leadership on cycle time reduction, costs of operations, and bringing more fast track products into the market. These goals are directly aligned with where Tribold EPM can bring real value to our users. We look forward to working together with the Internet Solutions’ team delivering these tangible improvements to their enterprise product range.”

Using MDA’s Revenue Assurance Solution, Ziggo, which provides TV, internet and telephone services to nearly 3.1 million customers, aims to maximise revenue performance throughout its complex operations environment.

“MDA’s software is enabling us to create detailed insight in the capturing and processing of our revenue generating activities in both a structured and highly automated manner,” said Mark Bergsma, manager of revenue assurance at Ziggo.  “We are now continuously able to identify and assess different areas where revenue is at risk, and take corrective actions where appropriate.”

Oracle updates Service Delivery product family with new releases

Oracle has unveiled the latest releases for its Communications Service Delivery product family designed to help communications service providers (CSPs) implement Next-Generation Intelligent Network (NGIN) solutions for IN replacement and evolution, network-enabled application stores (NEAS), IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and Long Term Evolution (LTE) network value added services.

Designed to help CSPs monetise innovative new services that leverage existing network assets, maximise profitability and accelerate time to market, the new releases include the fifth iterations of the its Communications Services Gatekeeper, Communications Service Broker, Communications Converged Application Server and Communications Presence.

With increasing industry demands being placed upon them, Peter Mottishaw, principal analyst, AnalysysMason, explained that CSPs must offer next-generation intelligent network solutions and new applications to mobile customers in a quick and cost-effective manner.

“The enhancements to the Oracle Communications Service Delivery product family will enable communications service providers to deliver greater value from next-generation network assets,” he said.

Liam Maxwell, vice president of products, Oracle Communications, said that the latest releases of these key components demonstrated the company’s ongoing commitment to leveraging best-of-breed technologies from its key SDP acquisitions – including BEA, Convergin and Hotsip – and enhancing them to deliver next-generation SDP and NGIN capabilities for CSPs.

“These new and enhanced product capabilities will help our customers reduce costs and accelerate time to market for tomorrow’s innovative, revenue-generating communication services,” he added.

Convergys Introduces 4G Solution to Optimise Telecom Profits

Convergys, a global leader in relationship management, has launched the Convergys 4G Solution, a next generation billing and customer care platform designed to enhance telecom operators’ ability to monetise their high speed voice and data network.

With their 3G networks under strain and in a bid to improve customer satisfaction and open the door to new offerings like high definition videos, 3-D experiences, and graphic-intensive games, CSPs are under pressure to monetise networks by swiftly launching new products, service bundles, and pricing models – particularly through the use of incoming 4G technology.

For those saddled with legacy billing systems that may find it difficult to keep up with the increased market demands and transaction volumes associated with 4G, Convergys says that its future-proof design can help not only from 3G to 4G, but towards the future of wireless standards and technology too.

The solution also enables operators to identify what is worth charging for and what is not.  For example, masses of low value data records cost more to charge for than the operator will make, so the solution enables providers to charge for those records in aggregate.  In addition, CSPs are able to scale billing operations up or down based on business requirements driven by seasonality, changing customer behaviours, and other factors.

Bob Lento, Convergys President, Information Management, said, “Whether or when providers see a return on all the smart phone traffic on their networks hinges on a different set of ‘smarts’ in the back office.”

Intec confirms exclusive report in VanillaPlus
that it is considering sale

Woking, Surrey, UK. – In a brief announcement to the London Stock Exchange on Monday, headlined “Response to Share Price Movement”, the Board of Intec Telecom Systems plc (“Intec”) stated:

“In view of today’s share price movement, the Board of Intec Telecom Systems plc (“Intec” or “the Company”) confirms that it is in highly preliminary discussions with a third party which may or may not lead to an offer for the Company. Discussions are at a very early stage, and as such there can be no certainty as to whether any offer will be forthcoming nor as to the level at which any offer might be made. A further announcement will be made in due course.”

This announcement follows VanillaPlus.com’s exclusive report on April 29, 2010 alerting readers to a plunge in Intec’s share price, market rumours surrounding Intec’s possible sale, and linking the company to interest from Convergys and Oracle. Intec declined to comment on the rumours at the time, but there was known to be considerable satisfaction at the Grameenphone contract win.

When the shares climbed by over 38% to 76 pence on Monday, VanillaPlus contacted Intec to ask for a comment. The above announcement followed an hour later:

Below is an extract from VanillaPlus.com’s exclusive report on April 29, 2010:
“The announcement (of a contract with Grameenphone of Bangladesh) comes as welcome good news after Intec’s share price came under intense pressure when the company issued a surprise profits warning at the end of March. The London-listed share price fell to 58 pence from 94.5 pence, although it has since recovered to 63.5 pence. Financial analysts say this has made it vulnerable to takeover – the company has been linked in the past to Convergys and Oracle.”

Telefónica O2 Ireland adopts Impact 360 speech analytics

Verint helps capture the ‘voice of the customer’
Verint® Systems Inc. has announced that Telefónica O2 Ireland, a provider of mobile services and communications solutions to customers and corporations in Ireland, implemented its Impact 360® Advanced Speech Analytics solution to help identify €1 million in potential savings by uncovering the underlying issues that prompt calls into its contact centre. By mining recorded calls and analysing customer interactions, the software from Verint® Witness Actionable Solutions® is helping O2 Ireland spot trends and opportunities, identify and respond to the root causes that result in unnecessary calls for customers, and gather key market intelligence.

O2 Ireland initially deployed the solution within its billing team to identify issues driving calls into the call centre. O2 Ireland was able to see that many calls were related to customers getting locked out of their accounts during the password-reset procedure. Supported by Openet’s FusionWorks Policy Manager product, Radio Access Network (RAN) Congestion system supplies policies to leverage proven technology for network congestion forecasting. It also enables operators to make real-time traffic management decisions to improve the subscriber experience.

Openet’s RAN Congestion solution combines network forecasting with key policy management capabilities. This functionality enables operators to determine what resources are allocated appropriately to subscribers, to ensure a higher quality experience in congested areas. This approach enables operators to mitigate the effect of performance issues on subscribers before they occur.
