Communications service providers (CSPs) are moving from talking about digital transformation to engaging in real projects. However, these aren’t cheap and investor demands for uninterrupted dividends could cause momentum to stall, writes George Malim.
The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed a €315 million finance contract with Cellnex to support development of the mobile telecoms infrastructure behind 5G rollouts in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Poland. The loan will mobilise total investment of €631 million to improve and expand the coverage and capacity of high bandwidth mobile network infrastructure in these countries, helping to speed up digital transition in both urban and rural areas.
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Nokia has announced the results of its new research report, a Nokia MEA Mobile Broadband Index, which provides an overview of the MEA region’s mobile broadband landscape. The report highlights the growth of 5G in the Middle East and Africa region (MEA) as well as its impact on digital transformation. It confirms that Middle East is far ahead of Africa in terms of 5G adoption, while many operators in Africa are still developing their business models around 4G. Voice traffic still relies on 2G and 3G networks in many parts of the region.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) and Ericsson have announced the launch of a free online academic programme on digital technologies and 5G for all students at the tertiary level nationwide. The ‘MY5G Ericsson Malaysia Pioneers Programme’, which will be live online from 11 January 2023 onwards, serves DNB’s objective of contributing to the development of tech talent throughout the country.
Axiata Group Berhad, Telenor Asia Pte Ltd and Digi.com Berhad has announced the completion of the merger of the telco operations of Celcom Axiata Berhad and Digi. With this, Axiata and Telenor will both hold equal ownership in Celcom Digi at 33.1% each.
