Satellites are rapidly gaining prominence in the world of cellular communication. However, the full extent of their potential to complement terrestrial networks as well as phone services and broadband is still unclear. Alongside this, the cost for satellite service plans tends to be higher because of the need to purchase expensive equipment and terminals. Although uses for satellites are currently limited, this evolving industry is taking its first step toward long-term growth, similarly to the evolution of terrestrial networks. “The emerging role of satellites in expanding cellular networks”
Skyloom Global Corp., announced that it has signed an agreement with Satellogic Inc. The agreement details plans to integrate Skyloom’s optical communications terminal onto Satellogic satellites. Utilising Skyloom’s OCT, Satellogic will test methods of high-resolution EO (earth observation) data delivery through both SkyCompass-1, the geostationary-based (GEO) lasercom network infrastructure Skyloom developed with its partner, Space Compass, and direct downlink to a gateway within view of low altitude image area, thereby decreasing latency.
MDA Ltd. has been selected as prime contractor for Telesat‘s low earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation Telesat Lightspeed, a global network that will bring enhanced digital connectivity to Canadians and customers worldwide. Valued at approximately $2.1 billion (€1.93 billion), the contract is large in MDA’s history and includes the design, manufacture, assembly and test of 198 satellites with options for Telesat to purchase up to 100 additional satellites.

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plans a regulatory framework to make it easier for satellite operators and mobile network operators to connect remote users and better support under-served areas. Freelance global business technology journalist, Antony Savvas says the move is welcome as satellite services become cheaper and collaboration between the two sets of operators gathers pace.
OQ Technology, a satellite operator of a 5G NB-IoT constellation, plans to grow its constellation from three to ten satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) this year. The seven satellites that will be added to the OQ Technology’s constellation, are the previously announced “MACSAT” and “PHI-Demo” satellites and five additional 6U nanosatellites, Tiger-4 to Tiger-8, which the company has already ordered.
SES has announced that the first two O3b mPOWER satellites were launched into space by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, United States, at 5:48 pm local time.
As the anticipated adoption of space tourism in the coming years leads to a predicted rise in satellite services, HUBER+SUHNER has launched the MINI250H cable assembly the most robust cable on the market today.
Southampton, UK. 6 July 2022 – AccelerComm, the Layer 1 5G IP specialists, unveiled LEOphy, a layer 1 modem that delivers enhanced performance for low-earth orbit satellite communications.
