Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Nokia has announced the results of its new research report, a Nokia MEA Mobile Broadband Index, which provides an overview of the MEA region’s mobile broadband landscape. The report highlights the growth of 5G in the Middle East and Africa region (MEA) as well as its impact on digital transformation. It confirms that Middle East is far ahead of Africa in terms of 5G adoption, while many operators in Africa are still developing their business models around 4G. Voice traffic still relies on 2G and 3G networks in many parts of the region.

Mobile data will be the main driver of growth in the African telecoms market, with the number of mobile broadband connections on the continent set to more than double over the coming five years, and rise from 419 million at end-2017, to 1.07 billion at end-2022, according to Ovum’s new Forecaster data service. “Mobile broadband connections in Africa will double to more than 1bn over the next five years”
