Quanta Cloud Technology, SUTD sign MOU to facilitate smart 5G open RAN in Singapore

Mike Yang of QCT

Quanta Cloud Technology (QCT), a global data centre and telecom solution provider, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). This QCT-SUTD MOU extends their aim to democratise networking and facilitate O-RAN (open radio access network) ecosystem setting up of a joint lab. QCT and SUTD will work with OTICs (open testing and integration centres) in Singapore and Southeast Asia to co-organise O-RAN Plugfest in region while supporting O-RAN related research.

With representatives from the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) of Singapore and O-RAN Alliance, QCT and SUTD announced their co-developed 5G use cases and technologies in their joint lab, as part of their co-endeavour to forge the local 5G and future communication ecosystem in Singapore. The joint lab will also serve as an assessment hub for the industry to reference and to add use cases developed from 5G O-RAN. Equipment required for these purposes will also be installed to be integrated with devices and systems in new use cases, allowing for objective assessment of the performance.

“QCT has foreseen tremendous potential for 5G and AI (artificial intelligence) development in Singapore,” says Mike Yang, president of QCT, “We are more than delighted to deepen our collaboration with SUTD with our joint lab initiative, which aims to solve real-life problems with smart applications running on reliable and cost-effective 5G open networks.”

A research collaboration agreement (RCA) was also signed to concretise the collaboration of both parties in the academic space, which includes leveraging QCT’s 5G PoC (proof of concept) experiences, such as those on drone, AR/VR, robotics, IoT, and 5G private network usage on cyber-physical systems, for use case enhancement. Scholarships for two SUTD PhDs and in-kind contributions were also offered for private 5G and AI related research to develop potential joint IP and 3GPP new features from smart use case perspectives.
