ZTE has partnered with China Mobile’s Jiangsu Branch to pilot one of the industry’s first 5G zero-carbon remote radio units (RRUs). The technology can be used to quickly respond to user demands, activating within approximately one minute when needed. This responsiveness improves the user experience and service quality.

The pilot trial conducted in Changzhou China, demonstrated the application of RRU hibernation technology, with standby power consumption as low as 3W. This represents a step in the development of zero-carbon base stations, further supporting energy-efficient 4G/5G dual-band dual-mode base stations.

The hibernation technology, originally designed for on-demand activation, has evolved to include RRUs as a result of ongoing technological advancements.

ZTE has achieved countrywide commercial deployment of 5G active antenna units (AAUs) since June 2022. The approach uses an integration of hardware architecture and software algorithms to achieve energy savings, reducing RF equipment power consumption by over 99%. With a software upgrade, an AAU can lower the energy consumption of a 5G base station to under 5W in idle mode, surpassing the energy efficiency of common household LED (light emitting diode) lamps.

An awakenable RRU has now joined the ‘zero-load, zero-consumption’ family. The RRU is the industry’s first FDD+TDD dual-frequency, dual-mode integrated RRU. Its ability to streamline network equipment and simplify deployment has led to widespread adoption within China Mobile’s network infrastructure.
