Sprint selects Mavenir for NFV cloud deployment

Günther Ottendorfer, COO of Technology at Sprint

Mavenir, the provider in accelerating and redefining software network transformation for Communications Service Providers, announced that Sprint is deploying Mavenir solutions in their nationwide Network Function Virtualisation OpenStack cloud deployment.

“With this next step for NFV, we are extending our existing vendor ecosystem with the introduction of new, agile and innovative players like Mavenir,” said Günther Ottendorfer, chief operating officer of Technology at Sprint. “Going forward, we will cap our expansion on legacy core network hardware, while growing new functionality and capacity on our virtualised platform.”

“Sprint’s network virtualisation initiative will leverage the benefits of NFV, as they evolve towards Gigabit LTE and 5G,” said Pardeep Kohli, president and CEO of Mavenir. “Mavenir will continue to provide greater flexibility, greater efficiencies, and more agility in terms of innovation as a full end-to-end 4G LTE and 5G, IoT network provider.”

Sprint is collaborating with Mavenir for the Telephony Application Server (TAS), Media Resource Function (MRF), and policy Diametre Routing Agent (pDRA).

Virtualising the EPC and IMS onto a single NFVI will enable Sprint to scale the mobile core up or down dynamically to support new 5G services, depending upon demand.
