Rohde & Schwarz to submit 5G next generation eCall test cases for GCF approval

A protocol conformance test case package for the new 5G next generation eCall (emergency call) (NGeCall) systems from Rohde & Schwarz, the PCT5-KC625, has been validated by the 3GPP Global Certification Forum (GCF). The protocol was initially submitted to the GCF by R&S, allowing NGeCall module makers to meet the test requirements for NGeCall type approval.

This development supports early testing of NGeCall systems, along with a new software add-on from the company – the R&S CMX-KA098 – for the R&S CMX500 one box tester, which provides testing functions for NGeCall. The new 5G NGeCall application option simulates the public safety answering point functions required for end-to-end conformance testing, which verifies the interoperability of the equipment under test to ensure a complete communication exchange.

eCall, the automatic emergency call system for vehicles in the European Commission, currently makes use of 2G/3G circuit-switched cellular networks. As these networks will be phased out in just a few years, emergency call systems will be adapted to the new 4G/5G packet-switched cellular networks.

Test solutions must provide eCall modules that include the new NGeCall functions. The modules must comply with technical specification CEN TS17240, which refers to the protocol conformance test cases and specifies additional end-to-end conformance test cases for eCall, as stipulated by 3GPP and the Internet Engineering Task Force.

It enables NGeCall module manufacturers to meet the test requirements for NGeCall type approval.
