Wind River®, a provider in delivering software for the Internet of Things (IoT), has announced that it will participate in a proof-of-concept (PoC) led by KDDI R&D Laboratories Inc. for automated operation for Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) test beds.

The PoC will utilise Wind River Titanium Server as its foundation for demonstrating the deployment of virtual network function. Titanium Server is a carrier grade NFV infrastructure software solution that meets the stringent requirements of the telecom industry.

During the latest PoC earlier this year, using virtualisation technologies, KDDI R&D Labs successfully demonstrated full automation of the operational flow for not only mobile equipment but also fixed-line facilities. For example, the demonstration includes management control systems that can automatically and immediately perform failure recovery for defects in software-based functions or virtualised platforms.

“KDDI R&D Labs is working towards SDN and NFV advancements to enable flexible response to service requirements, improve operational quality and efficiencies, and promote initiatives that will help realise the next generation of mobile infrastructure,” said Dr. Eng. Itsuro Morita, Executive Director, Core Network Division at KDDI R&D Labs. “We expect Wind River Titanium Server will help to drive future PoC and standardisation activities to enable advanced operations for the SDN/NFV era.”

“Delivering virtualised services at carrier grade levels of reliability and performance is essential as the industry is transitioning to NFV infrastructures,” said Paul Senyshyn, vice president and general manager of networking solutions at Wind River. “Wind River Titanium Server provides a NFV infrastructure that delivers the carrier grade reliability that meets strict telecom requirements and enables service providers to more easily and quickly find NFV success.”

By using Titanium Server as an NFV infrastructure software foundation, the telecom industry enjoys the best of both worlds: the rapid service deployment typically found in enterprise networks as well as the carrier grade uptime and reliability mandated by telecom networks. Based on technologies using open standards, including carrier grade Wind River Linux, real-time Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM), carrier grade plugins for OpenStack®, Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK), and accelerated vSwitch technologies, and optimised for Intel® architecture, Titanium Server brings together high performance and carrier grade reliability.

Additionally, the Wind River Titanium Cloud partner program provides an ecosystem of optimised, interoperable standard solutions based on Titanium Server to accelerate time-to-market for service providers and telecom equipment manufacturers (TEMs) deploying NFV infrastructure.
