The UC&C opportunity for mobile operators – Part 2

In the first part of this article we looked at how findings from recent research undertaken by PGi, a dedicated provider of collaboration solutions, in conjunction with Mobile World Live, revealed a 70% decline in users accessing meetings via desk phones, writes Frank Paterno, the vice president of global carriers at PGi. We outlined how the smartphone is now the go-to device for UC&C services, underlining the increaing mobility of workers. In this article, we look at the significance of the findings with regard mobile network operators and their projected influence on the use of UC&C services on smartphones.

Is 5G on a train to nowhere?

Recently I was on a train from Frankfurt to Nuremburg in Germany attempting in vain to get some work done, writes Robin Kent, the director of European operations at Adax. The issue I had is that, as there was no Wi-Fi available on-board, I was having to rely on the mobile phone network to remain connected. My frustration grew as my phone constantly flitted between 4G, 3G and 2G, causing emails not to sync correctly and an increasing amount of important messages becoming stuck in my outbox, as well as troubles with web browsing. Active VoLTE connections to exceed 1billion by 2018, as mobile operator roll-outs intensify

A new study from Juniper Research has found that the number of  Voice over LTE (VoLTE) connections is anticipated to reach 2 billion by 2020, rising from an estimated 123 million in 2015. According to the research, the marked improvement in voice quality enabled by VoLTE is likely to spur increased adoption of the technology. (more…)
