Carrier billing spend to reach $73.8bn globally by 2024, as 5G networks increase content consumption

Hampshire, UK. 8^t February 2022: A new report from Juniper Research has predicted that end-user spend via carrier billing will increase to $73.8 billion (€64.57 billion) in 2024, from $54.4 billion (€47.60 billion) in 2021, with growth driven by 5G-based mobile gaming and video subscriptions. To leverage this growth, the report advises operators to forge new partnerships with content providers to build frameworks that enable the distribution of new content paid for by carrier billing.

Smartfren and Fortumo launch direct carrier billing in Indonesia

Mobile payments company Fortumo and mobile operator Smartfren have announced the launch of direct carrier billing in Indonesia.

Thanks to the partnership, 12.5 million Smartfren subscribers can now make online payments without the need for a credit card by charging payments to their mobile account. Out of 250 million Indonesians, only five million have a credit card, according to the World Bank. At the same time, there are more than 65 million smartphone users in the country. This means that while most people have access to online content, 9 out of 10 people are unable to pay for it. Carrier billing resolves this problem for merchants, enabling any mobile phone owner – both prepaid and postpaid – to charge payments to their mobile phone bill.

Western Europe to fall even further behind APAC in carrier billing revenue by 2020

A survey by connected commerce specialist DOCOMO Digital has found that if economic, regulatory and technological conditions stay the same, carrier billing revenue in Asia Pacific (APAC) will grow by 63% by 2020, double that of Western Europe’s projection of 27% growth. (more…)
