Just how important is net neutrality?

In spite of public protests, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced plans to end the use of net neutrality in 2015, and in June 2018 the US officially repealed the rules that restricted the way internet providers could treat data. The impact was quickly felt. Research released in September 2018 by Northeastern University and the University of Massachusetts revealed that YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and NBC Sports were the main targets of slowing data speeds, or throttling.

What will tomorrow’s digital landscape look like? That question has always been difficult to answer, but even the most devoted future-gazers are struggling to address it today, writes Rafael Laguna, the chief executive and co-founder of Open-Xchange. Procera reports record growth driven by virtual networks and tier one wins

Procera Networks, a provider of deep packet inspection (DPI) technology, has announced a record number of contract wins and deployments during the past 12 months. The software provider’s customer base was bolstered by 36 new tier one service provider contracts in 2016 alone. Procera also increased DPI system deployments to more than 50 tier one and tier two operator installations. (more…)
