VanillaPlus Issue 5 2022: Why CSPs’ cloud native transformations rely on trusted partners

As communications service providers (CSPs) look to accelerate their telco cloud transformations in step with their virtualisation efforts, they are under increasing time pressure to enable the terabit era of massive volume, low latency communications to support a raft of digital use cases. The complexities of these tasks and the challenges of setting realistic yet sufficiently future-proof transformation strategies go to the heart of success or failure for many CSPs. With the stakes this high, CSPs are looking for support from companies that understand where they are coming from at the same time as having proven capabilities in new, cloud native networking disciplines.

Editor’s Comment

Will it be cohesive in Copenhagen or another fashion faux pas?

Telco cloud, multi-access edge computing (MEC), 5G and network slicing have all circled communications service providers (CSPs) for the last ten years, often gathered under the umbrella of digital transformation. Each has arrived on the scene amid the blaring of trumpets, matched only in volume by the investment demand, always measured in billions, that each technological innovation places on CSPs.

Now though, there’s a glimpse of the complete picture forming. The scenario that makes sense of these multiple multi-billion dollar investments and ties cloud-native networking to edge computing, 5G, network slicing and the flexible, agile future of telecoms. Virtualised, cloud-native networks will provide the flexibility and choices that customers want from their CSPs, and enable new business models to be adopted allowing CSPs to monetise their investments in 5G, fibre and IT effectively.

The confluence of disparate innovations creates the holistic future and an opportunity to charge based on the value of the service delivered rather than on the amount of network capacity consumed. It enables CSPs to be more than network vendors and to play an integral part in the entire digital value chain because they bring together the foundational functionalities the digital economy relies on.

Today though, this is clothing that doesn’t fit CSPs. Far from being a tailored suit that elegantly brings together the different technologies, what we’re actually seeing are hand-tooled leather shoes teamed with 1980s tracksuit trousers, a holed T-Shirt, an Armani jacket and a stained baseball cap. The hope is that as CSPs get more familiar with the innovations their outfits will hang together more cohesively.

The slick Italian three-piece suit may not quite be a reality – yet – but Digital Transformation World 2022 in Copenhagen and MWC Las Vegas 2022 may host the moments in which CSPs’ new wardrobes started to hang together for the first time.

We hope you enjoy the magazine and these events (whatever you choose to wear!)
