Openet deploys 3GPP RAN congestion awareness function

Openet has deployed what it claims is the world’s first 3GPP RAN Congestion Awareness Function (RCAF) for a tier 1 North American CSP.

In light of the new 3GPP standards, Openet’s Congestion Management Solution (CMS) will act as an RCAF – providing the US CSP with a 3GPP compliant mechanism for PCRF to receive RAN user plane congestion information via a new standards diameter NP interface. The CSP ntegrated CMS within its existing infrastructure; helping to optimise existing network resources and signaling assets, and minimise disruption to existing systems.

The US CSP deployed Openet’s solution to help intelligently manage and reduce congestion across all networks for subscribers. CMS allows the CSP to receive cell site congestion notifications from network probes, detecting those subscribers who are contributing most to cell site congestion.

These notifications are based on a combination of intelligent business logic, real time resource utilisation and subscriber consumption, and trigger network actions to help avoid congestion and provide a better user experience.

Openet’s Congestion Management Solution also actions Access Network Discovery and Selection Function (ANDSF) for more aggressive offload if required.

“Openet has been actively involved in the latest 3GPP standard for the RAN Congestion Awareness Functions”, said Joe Hogan, the CTO of Openet. “We are delighted to have deployed the world’s first 3GPP RAN Congestion Awareness Function (RCAF). Network congestion continues to hinder subscriber quality of experience. Our CMS solution is compliant with the latest standards to help operators intelligently manage their networks and better utilise Policy Manager and Network Selection Intelligence as permitted under Net Neutrality regulation.”
