China Mobile partners with Huawei to pilot deployment of the cloud-based core network

China Mobile has symbolised a Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) kick-off in China by hosting a conference titled Strategic Cooperation to create the future about the pilot deployment of a cloud-based core network in Xi’an, China.

This pilot project selected Huawei vIMS, which is deployed on both the Huawei general and carrier-class servers. In addition, the management and orchestration (MANO) is adopted for unified management and service orchestration. The small-scale trial aims to verify cloud-based networking, technical specifications, service capabilities, maintenance, and lifecycle management, laying a solid foundation for large-scale trial and commercial use of cloud-based core network in the future.

The deputy general manager of China Mobile, Shaanxi, Zhang Zhendong said: “NFV is the general trend of network evolution and shoulders the history mission. The pilot deployment is of great significance. We must have a high sense of responsibility, go all out to finish this project, and do a good job in skill improvement and talent reservation to embrace network transformations in the future.”

The general manager of Huawei cloud core network, Long Jiping, said: “As a strategic partner, Huawei has long-term and stable cooperation with China Mobile. Huawei will make every effort to ensure success for the cloud-based core network pilot deployment of China Mobile and to explore a better way to implement telecom cloudisation together with China Mobile.”

In this project, Huawei and China Mobile’s Shaanxi and Anhui branches will perform overall verifications to help China Mobile develop basic NFV specifications, including design, implementation, and O&M, and implement NovoNet2020 strategies.
