MYCOM OSI monitors performance of the UK’s new 5G testbed facility in Surrey

MYCOM OSI, a provider of next generation service assurance, automation/orchestration, and analytics solutions to the world’s largest communications service providers (CSPs), is participating in the University of Surrey’s state-of-the-art 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC).

Housing over 170 researchers and attracting over £70 million of investment, the 5GIC is the world’s largest academic research centre dedicated to next generation mobile and wireless connectivity. (See our report: 5G Innovation Centre opens at the University of Surrey)

The Centre brings together leading academic expertise and major industry partners to define and develop a global 5G network that will radically change lives across the world. Through their work, they have already developed a technology that enables speeds of one terabit per second (Tbps) – more than 1,000 times faster than the highest 4G speed – and filed over 15 patents.

MYCOM OSI provides 5GIC with software and expertise to manage and optimise network and service performance and quality, which are critical success factors for 5G.

Opening alongside the Centre is the 5GIC’s new testbed facility which provides researchers with a fully functioning advanced 4G network that will be upgraded to a fully-fledged 5G network over time.

MYCOM OSI software is being used to monitor end-to-end network performance of the 5GIC testbed – from the devices to base stations to core network servers – and during the 5GIC official opening will be displaying dashboards of performance metrics for the two technology demonstrations that showcase the testbed facility: ultra-high-definition (4k) video streaming over a mobile network, and; a new (5G-Sparse Code Multiple Access) radio waveform that supports 300% more IoT (Internet of Things) devices than 4G.

The MYCOM OSI dashboards include a network-wide view of equipment performance as well as design parameters related to the quality of the consumer experience that are critical to 5G success, including delay, volume of data transferred, and reliability. By analysing the real-time performance of these parameters in the 5GIC Testbed, the MYCOM OSI platform validates the designs of 5G R&D teams as well as providing analysis tools to further optimise those designs.

Payam Taaghol, CEO MYCOM OSI, said: “5G is more than just another tech upgrade – it is a big deal which will fundamentally change how we interact with our world, and we are delighted to contribute technology and expertise to help 5GIC lead global efforts in 5G R&D. As a UK headquartered company with 95%+ of our business coming from leading telecoms brands internationally, participation in the UK’s 5G Innovation Centre will directly benefit our business through improved development of our market-leading telecom network management technology.”

MYCOM OSI will also consider pragmatic best practices for rolling out 5G within the context of existing network technologies like 3G, 4G, HetNet and virtualised networks such as NFV, SDN, C-RAN. The company will also provide its Service Assurance suite to the Innovation Centre on an ongoing basis to support the development of next generation networking, including Performance Management, Fault Management, Service Management, Network Analytics and Intelligent Automation.
