Steve Newton, CEO – Aria Networks

1) What was your first job?

I was a civil engineer, working on the Humber Bridge in the UK, at the time the largest suspension bridge in the world. I made the tea.

2) What led you into a career in telecoms?

Happenstance, I was offered a sales role at DEC within their BT sales branch.

3) Without naming and shaming, tell us about your worst ever boss.

I’ve found bad companies tend to breed bad bosses, bad bosses thrive in regimes where there is limited accountability, I was acquired by one such company.

4) What has been your worst business travel experience?

Travelling to Australia from the UK in coach, arriving at 6am, then starting the meeting at 10am and then catching the 10pm flight back to the UK, again in coach. The silver lining was that the contract was signed at midday, and we had a great lunch.

5) What has been the proudest moment in your career?

I expect people who know me would expect me to say my time at Geneva Technology, and that was probably the most rewarding. However the last year at Aria Networks, where we have transformed the business, empowered the management, and enabled the staff to deliver innovation to two of the most innovative companies on the West Coast ranks pretty high on my scale.

6) Where do you see yourself in five years?

I have never been good at predictions, however Aria provides predictive analytics, so I will consult with our CTO.
