Ericsson has announced that it has reached an agreement with Providence Equity Partners, LLC and Warburg Pincus to acquire 100 percent of the shares of Telcordia for USD 1.15 bn.
The deal reinforces and expands Ericsson’s position as leading player in the BSS/OSS market with key positions in service fulfilment, assurance, network optimisation and real-time charging.
As well as giving Ericsson significant capabilities to support operators end to end, the new combination will also help to address the needs of CSPs in delivering mobile broadband and operational transformation to their subscribers.
Hans Vestberg, president and CEO, Ericsson, said: “The importance of operations and business support systems will continue to grow as more and more devices are connected, services become mobile and new business models for mobile broadband are introduced. In this context, Telcordia brings very skilled people and knowledge, a large business in North America and other markets, as well as a good multi vendor product portfolio.”
Arieso study suggests mobile operators could save $560m annually
Michael Flanagan, CTO, Arieso
Statistics from Arieso have revealed that mobile operators could potentially save more than $560m in operational expenditure annually by ‘powering down’ redundant base stations.
By analysing actual subscriber network traffic data that indicates network capacity demand, the firm believes that around 390,000 base stations can be powered down during quiet night time periods, saving more than 3.5bn KWh of electrical power. That reduction equates to a reduction of 1.9m metric tonnes of CO2e or the equivalent of taking approximately 478,000 cars off the road each year, globally.
As consumer appetite for mobile data continues to rise, operators have sought to add more network capacity by deploying new base stations in densely populated areas and busy urban zones. Although these new base stations help solve capacity issues during peak hours, during the dead of night many become redundant but continue to consume the same amount of power.
Michael Flanagan, CTO of Arieso, said, “Self-optimising networks have an important role to play in power saving. However, the challenge of knowing how and when to save power safely, without affecting the user experience, has not been met. Understanding the detail of when and, more importantly, where subscribers are using, or not using, the network is central to making these choices and realising the savings.”
Sandvine has announced the launch of Traffic Management Dashboard, the latest addition to its Network Analytics product. The new solution enables ISPs to carefully monitor congestion of network resources at a granular level and to respond appropriately to ensure a quality subscriber experience.
By closely integrating with Sandvine’s Fairshare Traffic Management product, the Traffic Management Dashboard provides quantitative evidence of the positive subscriber impact of congestion management policies. The new dashboard also provides a Capacity Planning Calculator, allowing service providers to optimise capacity investments while protecting subscriber experience.
Sandvine Network Analytics works by aggregating and correlating granular network data from the Sandvine Policy Traffic Switch, Service Delivery Engine and other business systems, to provide timely, actionable statistics and insight via user-friendly dashboards.
Chris Demange, senior director of Core Network Engineering at Cricket Communications, said: “Data-driven decisions served by network analytics are more accurate and lead to higher profitability. Mobile networks, devices, and users change rapidly. Sandvine’s Network Analytics allows us to adapt equally rapidly.”
George Vonderhaar, GM Global Cable & Satellite, Convergys
Convergys has unveiled an enabling platform for next generation services. ICOMS 9 will be pre-integrated with Convergys CRM and powered by Microsoft Dynamics CRM, a solution that made its debut at TMForum Management World 2011.

Bytemobile’s Smart Capacity Mobile Analytics helps operators manage data traffic
Bytemobile has announced new product enhancements to its Smart Capacity Mobile Analytics traffic reporting and analytics solution. The expanded offering provides improved insights into mobile data congestion, application traffic patterns and subscriber quality of experience (QoE) on operators’ networks.
Smart Capacity Mobile Analytics presents actionable network intelligence that enables operators to better understand the impact of video content and mobile application usage on their networks and measure the user experience. With this intelligence, operators can offer new and differentiated services and apply traffic management tools to improve network efficiencies.
Ronny Haraldsvik, vice president of Global Marketing at Bytemobile, said: “Continued aggressive growth in mobile data – fuelled by video and application usage over faster networks and more powerful, user-friendly devices in the hands of billions of people – has created a formidable traffic management challenge for carriers. Coupled with Bytemobile’s market-leading video and web optimisation, our new Smart Capacity Mobile Analytics solution provides network insights that are unavailable through traditional analytics technology.”
